the march bed

I was doing laundry today so had many piles of clean laundry on top of the bed. As I was making the bed pretty again after folding it all I realized I never took photos of the march bed and then I realized I never posted photos of the february bed. It seems I really have lost my blogging mojo (other than the capsule wardrobe which I am just finding really embarrassing right now). So here ya go, the march bed with garlands made for another march bed back in 2013. The last two pics taken with the camera phone...february bed photos coming as soon as I am able to find them.

scrumdilly style 3: day 10

Yeah, the blouse is too poufy and there is a bit of a bag at my knees and I said the black pants didn't sag but I think they still work well save for all the cat hair they collect. I do like the brown, black, and plum combo here. Phew!

scrumdilly style 3: day 9

Shirt over dress, yay or nay? I felt comfortable in it and the shirt did not ride up but looking at the photo my vanity wants to hide under the bed. Yeesh! The shoes are Alegria (lookie, the black is on sale!), not as wide as their mary-janes or oxfords but still wide enough for my feet. These have a very slight cloggish heel and there is sparkle in the shoe. Probably not the best footwear for a 44 year old but they will be great for my punk-rock red hat days, don't ya think?

scrumdilly style 3: day 8

scrumdilly style 3: day 7

Here's another combo I liked even if I feel the photo makes me look uber frumpy. It may be the shoes. Let's talk about shoes. I'm not sure why it is I love a clompy clown shoe but I do. I think it may be because I have a fairly small foot and a larger frame so that I look like I'm going to tip over unless my shoes have enough balance in front. See? Balance! It's important.  I think I have always liked this style of shoe, I feel like it is European (not necessarily stylish) and somewhere in my growing up someone wore these and I wanted them. I've tried many brands to finally find the pair that works for me. If you are searching for a hard to find foot and you find a brand or style you like, try ebay first. These oxfords here are Alegria that are usually priced over $150. I found this pair on ebay at auction for $35 with shipping. They are too big and they squeak when I walk but I still love them and know that the next pair I order (they come in pink!) will be one size smaller. Experiment, search, and shop without breaking the bank, your feet, or back!

scrumdilly style 3: day 6

Dress as jumper...what day think? It's a bit 80's perhaps or even maybe too preschool-teacherish? I don't care, I like it!

scrumdilly style 3: day 5

I liked this one. At least, it's comfortable and fairly stylish (ignore the waistband belly bulge please). The shirt is a comfy thrifted find and the pants are what I call my "old lady" ankle pant. I picked these up at Kohl's from the Croft and Barrow collection which I always think of as the old-lady shop. While these do not have pockets, the fabric fits well, does not bag, and is of a really nice black (not a green black or a brown black). The waistband fits flat and does not have an elastic insert that twists after the first washing. I hate when that happens! A nice stretch trouser that is slightly cropped keeps you from looking like you are wearing leggings. I have an ankle boot that I think would look swanky too. Also? A converse style low top if you can wear them and/or a motorcycle boot. See? Versatile! Don't be afraid of a form fitting pant!

scrumdilly style 3: day 4

So whatdya think? Sweater over dress and messed up motorcycle boots. I like it. Not a fan of the photo but I liked the ensemble. The sweater is a smidge on the bulky side with the waist gathers under there but not too shabby. Then again, maybe I look exactly like the preschool teacher I am? Keep it quirky!

scrumdilly style 3: day 3

This top is not a keep but I stuck with it and paired it with each piece. This is what thrift shopping is good for...trying out colors and styles that interest you without breaking the bank. Sometimes I fall in love with a style idea but the reality is my frame is not flattered by it at all (peasant tops...ahem). This top was one of those. It could be because it is an XXL but I think the tie front is distracting and makes the top poof over my already poofy belly. Also, the neckline is enormous and it keeps slipping to expose my tank top strap along with my super strength bra strap and that just ain't pleasant for anyone to see. Or that could just be me. I have a thing about bra straps showing not on purpose (makes me think of sad raccoons and all sorts of sloppy) but love a bra strap showing on purpose (I blame Madonna circa 1982).

The skirt? I love the skirt. It is mostly super comfy but it is also slightly see-through. I love the fit, flair and length of the skirt but the lining of the skirt is micro mini and I swear if I bend over it just waddles up to my waist. Sadly, as much as I love it, I fret when I wear it so I am adding it to the donation bin. Wearing clothing well for a larger frame is all about balance and comfort. If you are tugging at this and pulling at that don't wear it. I don't care how cute it looks on the hanger or on someone else or how pretty it is or if it is the perfect shade of blue, just don't do it. Let it go and move on, I speak from experience (have I mentioned peasant blouses yet?) Balancing out your shape can make or break an outfit and can make you feel all sorts of spiffy or like running home to don pajamas and weep. The skirt here is fitting enough at the hips making a slender shape. The weight of the skirt keeps the flair at the hem from trumpeting and making me look like this.

In a nutshell, think balance and comfort. You should not hanker for p.j.s and a bowl of lucky charms (I love lucky charms) as you are out and about. You should be out and about and so comfortable you are not worried about looking like a sad raccoon.

scrumdilly style 3: day 2

Chunky girls take note, the current trend is oversized tops for festival girls works in your favor! This tee is from Forever 21 and is a size Medium (get out!) I however am not 21 and far from a size medium but I loved this shirt when I spied it. It's loose enough to not fit snuggly but fitting enough to keep me from looking sloppy (I hope). Since the top is cropped I had to pair it with a tank. The lavender tank was $3 and also from F21. This one is a 2X. The XL fit but fit so snug it inched its way up  as if to cop a feel. I prefer my layers to be fitted but not so fitted I'm flashing people every which way. If you choose to wear a boxy top, make sure your skirt or pants are less boxy so that your frame balances out. The green linen pants are a new purchase from J. Jill. They are a dark olive with an elastic waistband and are cropped in length. Thick ankles be damned, I love a cropped pant. J. Jill's elastic waist bottoms tend to run large, just so you know. Their jeans however run a smidge small, not super small but they do not offer much wiggle room. I wear 12-16 in denim depending on the cut and brand. Their 14 skinny jean fits me tight in the waist but loose in the thigh, it may be because their denim sits at your natural waist and not at your hip. Not a mom jean waist but a higher waist than current trends.

*I've got 24 outfits for you to see so I am posting 2 a day with tips, tricks, and notes for you to find your fashion groove.

scrumdilly style 3: day 1

Good golly I love this dress! I love it! It's not vintage, but it has a vintage cut. I have no idea when it was made. This photo is from last year, I put the dress on this year and was happy it still fit. The way my allergies are I can't go outside anymore (no exercise) unless I want to wheeze, wheeze, wheeze for days on end (though I do run around the homestead doing dance stretches every half hour or so). As it stands I am taking steroids more than I like so now I'm a big puffball. The pills make me carry or retain water/fat in my belly and my neck...I'm all chins if I even slightly look down. I'm far from thrilled with the look, vanity be damned, but being able to breathe kinda trumps it all. If you are thick like me, a dress with a gather waist can be your friend. Stay away from drop waists though, they tend to draw attention to the hips making your width all that much more boxy. What I like most about this dress is that the waist hits me at a sweet spot so I can wear tops both under and over without adding bulk. And yes, those are leggings peaking out from under the skirt. I'm a chunky girl who definitely is deficient in the thigh-gap area so leggings or old lady pettipants are my best friend.

there's a capsule in the works

Actually, it is finished...but it is a bit of a cheater as I began it LAST YEAR and then I found some photos and wondered why I did not take all of the photos as I did it about half way through and so I dug out all the pieces and played fashion show all weekend and took picture after picture after picture to share with you all! I was so motivated, I pulled out a new batch for a more current capsule and even filled up a bunch of bags for donation. There are 24 days of outfits to be blogged, the only thing I need to do is photograph each piece which I will do tomorrow. Stay tuned for Monday!

birthday specs

I got myself a new pair of vintage glasses. Yay for Old Focals! This pair is a blueish slate color...a bit marbled and a smidge larger than my brown frames. I will still wear my brown frames but I felt a need for some new frames and it being my birthday and all...
