The last bed of 2014, can you believe it? I thought I would make a garland with the wood snowflakes but only picked up one pack and have stolen away more than a few for a preschool project so instead htye are taped up to the wall with washi which may or may not take. Sometimes things stick for the entire month while other times things fall on our heads in the night.  That's why the bulk of the taped stuff goes over my head as I won't even notice in my sleep.  The top pillowcase was made by me, the two peachy/pinky cases came from Target and the printed white cases are thrifted vintage. The quilt was a gift from Ms. Za, the yellow Vera throw at the foot is the flipside to one of my wonky patchwork pieces and the lap afghan was an estate sale find in Oklahoma purchased from the dear sweet gal who made it back in the 60s. The tiny bell garland was made by me as was the retro tissue tree. The tinsel? The tinsel is retro in color and purchased from either Target or Anthropologie years ago at an after Christmas sale. Phew! Merry Christmas Eve and a Happy 2015!

the {long, long overdue} august bed

 

 

 

swappy swappy

a long while ago an old swap friend and i decided to do a crafty fun garland swap. it took me forever to eke out the time to finish it but i did and it was super fun! lookie:

first off, i made this happy garland in red, aqua, yellow, and green. i love the wonky scallops with this color combo. i have extra scallops so i may whip up another smaller garland for myself.

my swap partner was crocheting me a doily garland and told me she preferred cotton yarn. how cool is it that i found these wee little bits of happy cotton yarn. yay! i popped them into a small metal tin with a minty green top. double yay!

keeping with the color theme i found a trio of happy washi tape to snuggle inside a second tin just like the one holding the yarn.

the rest of the bits and bobs did not exactly fit in with the color scheme so i wrapped them up to match. i think this little package is full of an awesome earl grey tea.

one of these little packs is hiding a locally made bar of soap that smells of chocolate and lavender while the other hides a lively pair of socks covered in teacups from our local shop sock, The Sock Drawer.

i have no idea what i wrapped inside here. it was a longer package...huh. i am getting old and cannot remember anything.

and here is the happy pile of wrapped up goodies. ooh, maybe the garland is in that red package up above. there was a lot of fun packed inside...tea, soap, tape, yarn, socks, cookie cutters, and the garland plus more that i cannot remember. either way it was super fun but i think my swap partner went cute crazy and sent me the much better package. photos coming soon! yay for swaps!

diy: easter chick garland

I've had two packs of chenille easter chicks hanging around the tiny casa for three years now just waiting, waiting, waiting to be strung up for a march or april bed. Enter one very bad day in a bad brain kind of way and a million things to do and you get a very cranky jek craft, craft, crafting away at this. I made the entire garland in less than ten minutes and then realized I never took pictures of the april bed so I strung it up in zee bedroom instead of the living room and got all shutter happy.

This is super duper easy. Make sure your chickies have felt wings, otherwise you'll be threading your yarn or string into them and they will be flying away. The chenille used for the chicks is so fine and fluffy that there is not much to anchor it all together.

 

I looped off my yarn at both end, hung it up, then arranged the chicks. It's all seriously happy, is it not? I was worried the blue chicks would be a bit faded against the aqua wall but the wall is just green enough and the chicks are just blue enough it all works. Tomorrow is Easter so maybe on Monday you can score yourself a couple boxes of chickies on super sale. Enjoy!

make a 4th of july garland with popcorn bags

 

Happy almost-july friends! This garland is 8 ft long! I used four different styles of popcorn bags. The classic red and white stripes bag came from The Dollar Tree and the white bag with red and blue stripes came from Cost Plus. The other two bags were etsy finds.

I used my sewing machine to zig-zag stitch the paper bags to a wide grosgrain ribbon. I quite like the differences in their sizes. Since the bags are paper, you could easily use a fold and glue method to create your own garland.

deconstruct a doily

I picked up a pack of gold paper doilies to use as props for sweet november. Of course, in the middle of setting up a photo I ended up deconstructing one of the doilies into a pile of pretty. I then took the pretty to the sewing machine and whipped up this happy garland. 

All you need is one large paper doily, a pair of scissors and a sewing machine. YOu can also weave a length of embroidery floss or yarn through the doily pieces instead.

dilly it up: spool garland

When the ander-boy turned ten and decided to have a  Mad Tea Party, I knew I had to make something if only to get my craft on and be a part of the fun without actually being there since I couldn't get down for a visit. In my head I wanted to create stunningly gorgeous garlands using vintage spools and other pretty bobbs but the reality was that I did not have enough vintage spools and it was a party for ten-year-olds who would probably more enjoy a healthy dose of color!

More than a year ago, I purchased a bag of thread from the magic thrift for the happy handful of wooden spools that lurked about the bottom of the bag. The remaining thread went into my thread drawers ready to be used up. Sadly, most of it was old and kept snapping in my machine so I felt not a stitch of guilt stringing them up for this happy bit of love.

Bright golden yellow yarn was used for the stringing and tiny dollar store spools popped in for variety. To balance it all out, in between spools, I glue-sticked on happy punched circles. These helped keep the spools in place and added a bit more liveliness to the whole deal. After looping up the ends, the garlands were ready to be mailed off. But how?

Thank goodness for my pack-rat tendencies and a penchant for keeping egg cartons. The spools nestled nicely, each in their own cup while the yarn bits were tucked away on top with no worries for tangling. They arrived just in time and added a happy dose of color to the outdoor festivities. I'm still bummed I wasn't able to be there but at least I was in spirit, right?

make a christmas garland

i'm revisiting the junk mail garland for this holiday season. this time i used newspaper with a couple of coats of white paint. i used a small circle punch after cutting scallops into the painted paper and used a ziz-zag on the machine to stitch all the happy to a long length of vintage trim. then, because i sometimes forget when to stop, i added a few more stitches to each flag.

i love the way it turned out and quite like painted newspaper. such a happy medium. stay tuned for a fun snowflake tutorial.
