inspired by andie: a pretty in pink tribute

pretty in pink 1

I was quite excited...maybe a tad too much, to have discovered Pretty in Pink on Netflix streaming. How could I not be? Pretty in Pink's Andie has been a major force in my fashion aesthetic. I was 15 when I first saw it at our local theater (which we walked to in our pointy toed flats or grannie boots) and was immediately smitten with Duckie (of course), lusted after both Andie's and Iona's wardrobes and so wished for a Volkswagen Karmann Ghia (chartreuse with aqua trim) that I took to sketching out outfits full of vintage floral goodness with a touch of leather studs. Oh how I wish I still had those sketches! I also thought Blane was a hoser and Andie a bit as well based on her treatment of Duckie and yet, I totally get it after watching it now as an adult. John Hughes truly was a teen movie genius. The "films" that come out now don't really seem to touch the frontlines of being in highschool like Hughe's films did. It might explain a lot but my memories of teendom are still fairly strong in my mind. I'm not sure we ever leave those feelings behind and I still feel like a confused wallflower trying to figure out who she is.
But back to my movie lurve. Andie's style (thank you Marilyn Vance!) not only spoke to me, it sang to me and so I filled my closet (well, acutally the floor of my bedroom) with all things vintage. What began with a little lace, floral and denim soon morphed into a lot of print, pattern, more lace, and more denim. I also became a fan of hats and bangles and tights...oh the tights I had! While I am currently in a fashion slump, I still collect images of what I would wear if I felt I could pull it off and have a very full pinterest board to show it. Someday...little by little, piece by piece I will get there. For now, here is my take on my favorite outfit from the movie and no, I was so not a fan of the prom dress (though I did like the sleeveless turtleneck, I though that was quite mod).

birthday dreams and wishes

birthday dreams and wishes

birthday dreams and wishes by jekinthebox featuring sephora collection

My birthday is coming up in a few days and people keep asking me what I want. Here are some things at the top of my wishlist that I am working on purchasing for myself and I thought well, if anyone else wants to then I will make a pretty list for them. Let's see if I can explain some of it to ya.

The shoes there are somethng I really want and I keep revisiting them to remind myself that I am serious about them. They are not exactly birthday priced but they make the picture look a smidge prettier.

The sunflower seeds are up there because I really like snacking on the microgreens and am in need of organic seeds for sprouting. I'm thinking sunflower, chia, and peas sound really tasty!

The birdie shirt is really sweet and I really like the neckline and of course it being grey just ups the ante in my mind. I am also keen on acquiring a purple, grey or orange shirt from our local record store, speaking of which I added some music up there that I would like to get and think an iTunes card would always be appreciated...or a GC for the record store.

As for the brush, I want to try dry brushing. Do any of you do it? What do you think?

Stamps are there because I want more stamps. Real usable USPS postage stamps for writing letters. I am trying to write more and stamps would help. This picture was a lot prettier than the one at the USPS site, also you can't clip images from there anyway.

I'm still on the lookout for a pretty embroidered Mexican peasant blouse or dress. They are all so lovely but I think a white top with colorful embroidery would be perfect for summer here in town.

My nose rarely works but I would love to have some chocolate tea around in case it DOES. Adagio teas are really tasty and I like so many it is hard to choose. For now, I will say chocolate with black tea...not rooibos. I'm not really a fan of the rooibos.

The mascara is because I am almost out of mine and I get lazy and buy the cheapie cheap kind and the cup is there because I broke the straw from the one I already have and this one here is not only prettier but BPA free as well.

Lastly, back in highschool, my favorite bag was an old army surplus bag that my brother got me. I loved it and wish I still had it. I think a hefty green army sack would be perfect to use as a camera bag of sorts and would look really cool with some hand-making, patching and embroidery.

Not included is the ever famous butter fudge I am always talking about. Being anosmic means I don't get to taste much and not tasting much means I have fallen out of love with chocolate. The texture isn't very fun when you cannot taste or smell it. This butter fudge is amazing when you can taste it and smell it and pretty darn good when you can't because the texture is so perfect. It is a hard and chewy fudge...kinda crumbly but is so satisfying to bite into. It was the first thing I added to my polyvore pile and I cannot believe I forgot to actually toss it in the mix.

So there ya go, sweet dreams for a soon-to-be 42 year old. We're not planning anything big, just lunch or dinner at my favorite place in town (they make the BEST pita bread ever) and I have demanded asked the mister to make me an apple pie...with homemade whipped cream. The week after that we will visit L.A. and see my brother and a few friends, jump at the fountain, and eat ourselves silly so really, I will be celebrating my birthday for a week!

gifties goodness for the hiking girl

gifties goodness for the hiking girl

Here is my go to wish list for items I use and/or want for our many mini adventures. Now, I  am not a serious hiker. Nope, not me. I am in fact a bit of a wandering lazy hiker who may or may not be prone to whininess when the wheeze kicks in or the hills get too steep. This odd assortment of goodies helps me get through it all. If you are just starting out or have a friend or two who are prone to the wander any or all of these items would be well received (within reason of course).

My very first pick up there is that pink thing. See that pink thing? That is a pstyle and is every girl's best friend for hiking, campingm outdoor events and/or any place that is prone to sporting a port-o-potty or two. Seriously, the pstyle is my saving grace for doing the deed when I need to most with nary a rest stop in site. You can read more about the pstyle here and here.

Next up is a good pair of socks. I am wishing for some smartwool socks for myself. Mister swears by his and so it is about time I get my own pair and so should you. Along with a good pair of socks, every gal needs an extra pir of gloves and a warm hat to keep the chill off. The cheapie magic stretch gloves are not a bad bet for having a pair or two stashed in the car or various jacket pockets. Sure, a fancier pair of gloves will better keep your ands warm but even the slightest protection from the chill is a good thing. There are all sorts of nifty etsy sellers creating upcycled gloves and mittens. I'm kinda in love with these zombie funk mittens by madhadher and these hobo gloves from ReWoolables. As for hats, etsy is also my go to place for a handmade chapeau. Harry and the Hippie Chic have a nifty assortment in their shop. If you have a pile of wool sweaters at home, you can also try your hand at making a hat or a headband even.

Other bits such as sunscreen, lip balm and moleskin are things we tend to forget about. Sunscreen will both protect you from sunburn and keep you moisterized. Lip balm will keep yer lips from getting all chappy-chapped and moleskin will ease any blisters that decide to pop up. Diaper cream is no joke and will greatly soothe any chafing that happens on longer hikes (I speak from sad expeirence). A small tin of pastilles can help with nausea when gum is not around, a whistle can save yer life and a small first aid kit packed with ointments and such isn't too shaby either. Trail mix will keep your energy up and a water bottle will of course, when full, keep you hydrated.

And lastly, for summer hiking, a banadana is a lifesaver. Tying a wet bandana around your neck keeps you cool when it is warm out and is also a handy tool for cleaning up yer dusty face or washing dishes even if you must. This skull bandana is all kinds of cool.

So here ya go, a gift guide for the outdoorsy type full of things that will both come in handy and be quite useful. Enjoy!

sweet november: a simple fall ensemble

sweet november

This is what I would wear given the chance on a perfect fall day. I can sort of pull this look off now but my jeans are a bit more slouchy-loosey and my sweater is not nearly as nifty. My scarf is grey, my coat green and my bag could be grey or yellow. The shoes are a bit of a dream but I do have a pair that would work sort of. All in all I would wear this for any type of wander that did not include going up a muddy mountain or across an icy cold stream. Let's say this is perfect for breakfast or lunch and delightful for a visit to the apple farm or pier or perhaps one of Tara's picnics, what is your favorite go to ensemble for November?
