perseids 2016

the moon through the telescope
The mister and I first met in August of 2002, right around the same time of the month as when the debris stream otherwise known as The Perseids crosses paths with us...or the Earth does with it and vice versa. Every year on our first date anniversary, aka the rootbeer-float-a-versary, we check to see if the skies will be clear enough to go out and have a looksie. Having moved up to SLO, we are lucky enough to be about n hour away from the Carrizo Plain which is the perfect spot to rest our heads for the night in search of meteors and falling stars and all that happy spacey stuff. This year, we brought along the sister-a-go-go and her fella.

It takes about an hour or so along a very windy road to get there. The air is dry enough that we do not have to worry about mosquitoes and so we do not bother with a tent, just our camping pad and a pile of blankets...it can get chilly over night.
Mister brought his telescope so we could ooh and aaah over the moon and other heavenly bodies the mister finds through the viewfinder. I never get tired of how cool the moon looks through the magnification. Snacks are in abundance and us girls have our p-styles handy just in case. Once the sun set, we saw a good meteor every few minutes. By good, I mean one that is large and has a long sparkly tail...the kind that makes everyone shriek as if they were watching a fireworks show.
up before the sun
At some point, our eyelids droop and we snuggle down into our makeshift beds. Throughout the night we wake up to watch the sky and are always rewarded. From shooting stars to the calls of the owls (screech, barn, and burrowing) and meadowlarks, it's all pretty cool...even the kangaroo rats that scurry about looking for crumbs are cool...a little less cool was the realization that the holes in the ground all over the campsite were probably for tarantulas and not squirrels like we thought. How did we know that? We saw one come out...that was actually kinda cool...until I started overthinking it...

greeting the sun on the drive home
We were up and on our way before the sun was fully out. A makeshift breakfast of fruit and yogurt was gobbled up, pictures were taken, and sights were seen. We'll see you again in 2018...in 2017, we will be in Wyoming for the solar eclipse!

we got new camping mugs!

Now we just have to go camping. Preferably somewhere that has no pollen. Or dust. Or flowers. Sigh. Maybe we'll just camp out on the sofa and enjoy a cuppa in these gorgeous enamelware mugs. We picked these pretties up at Jimtown Store in Healdsburg and I wanted to get the entire collection...tumblers, bowls, teapots...siiigh. If you can't make it to Jimtown, you can find these and more on Amazon as well as the PBS store. Or, trying searching for Folklore Day & Night. Have fun!

the perseids: a campout

camping beds
The Perseids meteor shower is visible in the U.S. every August and every August we aim to go out and watch meteors. Some years we manage to schlep ourselves out to a dark sky while others we throw in the towel due to light pollution or a full moon.
waiting for the show
This year, there would be a new moon  which meant dark skies! After making sure there would be little or no cloud coverage, we took advantage of geography and headed out to Carrizo National Monument which is only two hours away. We even brought the nephew a-go-go along for the ride and found ourselves to be the only folks in the campsite.
early morning meteor watching
We drove into the campsite around 8pm and set up our sleeping area first. Since we were the only folks around we took the first site with a view of the open sky in the direction of where Perseus would rise (no tent, just sleeping rolls). The mister set up his telescope while the nephew wandered around in search of bullet casings and the like. I checked out the bathroom situation which was not good. Thank goodness for the pstyle!
first photo of the day
The sun was setting and we were sticking to red bulbed headlamps and flashlights to help our night vision. There were still active critters bounding and flying around. We heard coyotes howl and a great horned owl serenaded us all night long.
the nephew does not want to wake up
As we prepared for the evening we began to get a glimpse of the show. No fireballs but nice bright shooting stars with starry dusty tails. Better than fireworks!
sunrise
Through the telescope we got to see Saturn and two of its moons, the Trifid Nebula, and the Lagoon Nebula. It was also dark enough to clearly see the Milky Way. Truly beautiful. We went to sleep around 10pm and would wake up every other hour or so to watch the sky. We lost count of all the activity, it was very cool. We even saw them in the morning with the sunrise. Really cool!
breakfast
We didn't pack much but I did bake some brownies and packed some milk and apples so we had a perfect camp out breakfast. The other junk food (popcorn, potato chips, and chocolate) didn't get consumed as we were too busy watching the sky.
they sound like rain
The campsite is pretty barren but they have planted cottonwood trees here and there and they are on an irrigation system (which woke us up around 4am, it was quite a startle). I think they will offer some really pretty shade when they get larger. On the plus side, when the wind travels through the leaves it sounds like rain.
playing early bird
We were up and on our way back through the park by 6:30 in the morning. We could hear meadowlarks and burrowing owls and quail. It was warming up but still cool enough to wander around.
on the road again
I may not be the best morning person but I love when I manage to be a morning person. Especially when I am outside and all around me is nature. Swoon!
pretty cirrus clouds
We took the nephew to Selby Ranch where we wandered and took in the old barn, rusty truck, and weeds. The sky was a tremendous shade of blue.
it was dry, dry, dry
Evidence of the drought was everywhere. Here, the ground would crack with each step. So many textures and layers to see.
made a new friend
The mister and the nephew were way ahead of me (hello pokey camera person) and managed to spook this gorgeous barn owl. The old barn at the ranch has been dilapidated and falling down for ages. Recently it was rebuilt in parts and the old windows were meshed in. The owl probably entered the barn from a hole near the roof. It took a few flights around the interior before it found the hole and flew out to meet the sky.
exploring
This old rusty truck has been here for ages. The nephew spent some time exploring it and the area around it. I, of course, took photos.
obligatory self portrait
While leaving the barn I finally felt awake. What a difference from that first pic of me to this, right? I was still groggy from the lack of sleep. Spent more time watching the sky than sleeping...oh and the bats! There were bats that kept swooping right across our faces. They worked better than bug spray! If you ever get the chance to sleep outside under the stars without a tent, go for it! I'm glad we did it. We need another camp pad though, my old hips are killing me but still, it was gorgeous! There are a few more pics to follow...check 'em out.

crazy for camping

it's all natural
pretty pretty tent bed
we're heading out for nine days on the road. all but two of those days will be just the two of us in then car looking for places to pitch our tent. we may or may not find places to bathe. eegads but i hope we find some water to jump into. are we crazy to be hitting the road in august? i mean, i know we're crazy in other ways but camping in the summer? in the heat? us two pale, pale a-go-gos? i am certain we will have a blast, we usually do. we're making a pit stop in Reno to visit my aunt and uncle and if we're lucky and we can coordinate it well i might even get to meet this nifty person and this one.

we leave friday and are still in planning mode as to what we're bringing to eat. we can't bring too many items that need cooling cuz how are we going to manage keeping them cool for so long? so i hit the market yesterday for all sorts of precooked, prepackaged stuff which actually makes my toes curl with all that packaging but we'll have apples and nuts and cheese and i'm baking some gingerbread and muffins so i hope we'll be okay. there's a lot of food out there that would make for excellent camping excursions if only they didn't have a zillion and a half pounds of sodium. what's up with that? anything above 15% (except for 1 can o chili) and i left it on the shelf so i didn't come home with much save for a few rice packs, some quinoa, sardines and taters. we're gonna make some foil packs with taters and dried mushrooms, i'm already anticipating that sort of goodness. anyone have any hints for trips that last longer than the weekend? after i log off here i will be experimenting with powdered milk. exciting no? i wish i picked up more of the boxed milk quarts i found at big lots a few weeks ago. organic shelf happy boxed milk for $1.99. it was borden's brand and it was in a box and why oh why did i only pick up 4 quarts? we have one in the freezer which we will use in the ice chest but once it's open we need to drink it up. hello cereal, here we come.

hope y'all have a most happy august when i get back i get to continue on with the purge. perhaps this trip will unstick me. i hope so. lassen, bristlecone pines & reno, here we come!
