Photobooth Friday: J E K

j e k ...that's me!
Read all about it here!

Booth fun can be found all over the boothing town!

Bunnies are here! (almost)

They still need bows and closing and cello, but the bulk of them are done! Phew! Madness, I tell you, madness! You want one now right? I will be updating the shop by Monday. You can pre-order them from me here if ya like, the cost is a little less since there are no extra fees but these bunnies are sooo perfect and will last much longer than the real chocolate deal. No tummy aches, no cavities, just pure handmade goodness!

I'm baking biscuits right now to surprise the mister with breakfast since I've been up before the sun even thought about it. Soon, I will be off for some breakfasting with a very special leap year gal! Happy Birthday Leets!

Oh what a Mornin'

It really was too delightful to wake up and start the day. How could I when it was warm enough for the window to be open and all the birds were out chirp, chirp, twittering away? The cat did not attempt to sleep on my head or hip or feet and it was just cool enough to lay there daydreaming and dozing. I am so glad I changed out the flannel pillowcases for something a little sunnier. I can't wait for spring to be sprung!

I never got back on track yesterday for all that I have to do, but I did manage to free the printed bunnies from their long line of fabric and most got their backing fabric matched to them. Today I will put the machine to work and then plop myself in front of the tellie-fridge and watch some cheesy chick-flick or perhaps I'll have me a Gilmore Girl's marathon (ya gotta love birthday gifts!). The funky pain which may be some sort of allergy related thing (I really hope, hope, hope not) is finally fading so I'm pretty sure I'll be downward-dogging it in a few days. And now I must chow down on the magic smoothie and not too pretty (my fault) oatmeal that the mister left for me this morning when I swore to hime I was getting up just as he was leaving oh about three hours ago. Eeps! Oh and how dorky am I that I am excited to do laundry today because I can hang them out to dry? Yay for sunny weather!

I'm still celebrating!

How could I not when I have all this eye candy to look at here. The mister baked me a toffee cupcake from this cookbook. I don't think it was actually very toffee flavored but it was pretty darn yummy. I do believe we will bake these again. We used a dark chocolate bar that arrived in the mail from a flickr friend and the combination of brown sugar, honey and chocolate was divine. Dark chocolate is growing on me, more and more each day. And, since I'm not much of a frosting person, we used whipped cream on top. Now that is something I can sink my teeth into. They're even good without anything on top. but I suppose that is how baked goods are. All that butter, sugar and sweetness, how can it be bad? Oh wait, here's how...I adore merengue cookies. It was one of the first recipes my mamos taught me when I was a little girl. They were like magic. How could and egg become this? How could something lighter than air taste so dreammy? Don't they look dreamy? The lavender food color swirling about, the fresh lavender buds taking a dive into the sweetness? A dozen or so dollops onto the parchment paper and I was tap dancing for some goodness. And then, the waiting, waiting, waiting. Oh how I waited. I got myself all in a "mood" for these cookies. I put on a lovely pair of olive green leggings and wrapped myself up in the softest navy blue dress and then I curled up on the sofa with a cup of jasmine tea and a viewing of one of my all time childhood favorite flicks, Shirley temple's Little Princess. I wrapped myself up in a charcoal gray blanket as witch-baby curled up on my lap for a snooze and I waited. I waited and watched and waited and cried at the poor treatment our little princess received. I cried at the magnificent feast the neighbor brought to the girls and I bawled only like Margaret O'brien could when Sarah found her father but he didn't remember her. I cried, I sniffled, I sobbed and I waited for those darn cookies to dry themselves out. And then I remembered, "Oh crap!" that I had left the oven ON, yikes! I rushed to the kitchen tripping over the cat, slipping on the blanket knocking over the now-cold tea, grasping the waistband of my slipping off leggings. I opened the oven door to find a dozen dry, brittle no-longer-lavender blobs of merengue. I lifted one up off the parchment and it felt like a merengue should so I took a bite and then shook my head. Oh Jessica, I thought. You are a dolt. They may have been ugly but had I bothered to put sugar in them they may have been good. Note to self. Always use a timer and always add a least a little sugar.

The (Birthday) Week in Review: Feb. 18-24

I really need to get some crafty pics up, which means I really need to get some crafting done. The busy-ness of the last few weeks is finally catching up with me. I need a LONG break! For now, I'll dazzle you with this photo collage.

It was an extra special busy kind of week. I made it to yoga twice last week (but not today) and got a whole lotta visiting done. My birthday weekend was just dandy and probably would have been better had I not had a funky reaction to something I ate. I'm still hurting, literally but you don't all need to know about that. I'm behind on returning phone calls, sorry Sis! I'm behind on swap packages, sorry Sash! I'm behind, behind, behind on so many things but I have GOT to finish up a homework assignment I have no clue to do and I have GOT to get some Coco Bunnies in the shop. This week is gonna be a whopper! Wish me luck! Oh and if you wanted one of my Valentine's Day mixes, I need your address, even if you think I have it because who knows where in this tiny, messy casa it is.

Here's my birthday recap in a nutshell:

The day before my birthday I had a playdate with these ever fabulous ladies. We went here and ate here and had oodles of fun. On Saturday, we had a yummy brunch with my good friends here. Then we trekked here for some fun looking about. Afterwards we headed here for supper and then the mister and I looked all over town for a working one of these to no avail. We compromised and took a different photo instead and then on Sunday we hung out with this lady and the mister made me this cupcake and we watched this to the sound of the blimp and the helicopters not three miles away from the real deal. Other than the icky pain, it was a great weekend and now I have homework to do.

Photobooth madness can be found here and here.

Happy Day!

Goodness

Oh Goodness! My brain is having the most difficult time not exploding from all that is in my head. There are so many things I want to make and do. Such an inspiring week this has been. From pretty things in magazines to awesome creations on flickr to springtime colors seen at Anthropologie to a worn vintage sweater, I'm about to burst! Today is the last day of my 36th year. Tomorrow I will turn 37 and begin another year of creativity...hopefully even more so than the last.

Today is the kick start to my birthday weekend, because you know, it is after all, MY birthday so why not make it last? I just got back from Yoga and I am worn and tired and exuberant. I will quickly made a madcap dash about the casa to straighten things up and put the finishing touches on a couple of gifties for wee friends and then it is off to a photobooth and some cupcake eating with my gals Stacey and zaza. Oh I can't wait! Happy Friday folks!

Aren't those cupcakes pretty? They're from Leda's in Sherman Oaks and we snacked on them while watching ANTM. Thanks Renee!

Hop! Hop! Hoppin'!

A new round o' bunnies will be up in the shop soon! I just need to stitch up some samples as I'm thinking of doing customs this year. I have the fronts all printed. Four or five different browns and then brown printed bunnies on pastel pink, green, blue or yellow. You get to pick the backing color and bow and I'll stitch them up an mail them to you. I can't wait! They make me very happy. No bunnies in boxes this year, just cellophane. Oh how I love spring and Easter and bunnies!

The Week in Review: February 11-17

It was a chaotic, fun, crafty, busy and ickified week. I broke out the gocco for this year's batch o' bunnies and mailed off most all of my swaps. I baked merengues and cupcakes and popovers. I coughed, I sneezed, I whined and I ached. I did not however manage to nap. Drats! This week, hopefully, will be better. I'm still feeling sickish but it's moved up to my ears. Youch! Hope y'all have a most pleasant week. This is my birthday week. Whee!

sigh

Yesterday was a busy day. I got all gussied up for the holiday and took silly pictures. I also made some cupcakes and some homemade cinnamon cream cheese frosting. I then hit the library and merrily went my way to class. I've got a big time research paper due and I need to come up with a topic. Yikes!

Now, it's almost three in the afternoon and I have done nothing all day. Nothing productive mind you, it's not like I was simply sitting on the couch looking at my sock monkey collection. Though, truthfully, there was much sitting on the couch as I am feeling halfway run over by something large like an SUV or something. I'm not having an agreeable moment with all the ick and sickishness that is floating about the neighborhood. Everyone seems to be coming down with the ick or ending the ick or in the middle of it all. The hacking I am hearing is enough to make me hide in the bathtub. If only my bathtub were nice and didn't drain so quickly. I'm in that purgatory of not being sick but not feeling good. It must be a lot like how my mamos felt all her life. Not fun, I'm telling you. Not fun.

Today I did however, wash the dishes and watch this movie. I also read this magazine and looked at this book. I think I will sit on the floor now and organize my fabric stacks or maybe I will snuggle back into the sofa with this movie and one of these.

two-thirty

meowThe husbandman likes to often tell the "two-thirty joke". It is a lame and ridiculous play on sound which gets a groan from me every time; which I just noticed right now it actually is 2:30! How serendipitous.

The joke goes something along the lines of

"What time is it?"
"2:30"
"I't's time to go to the dentist!"
"What?"
"Tooth Hurty?"

Get it? Get it? Hahahahaha....

Speaking of which I had a date with the dentist this morning that I was not exactly excited about...I have two more dates too...Lucky me! It went okay you know, except for the bzzzz of the drill and all that cold, cold water dripping down my face. Every time the tiny drill would start it sounded like a bunch of cartoon fleas on a party line in my mouth. Do you remember that old cartoon with the flea on the dog and he sings "Food around the corner...?" We here at the A-go-go household often sing that song. I think I giggled everytime the drill went on.

I had a bite block for the first time and why oh why had that never been introduced before? Sheesh, people. Hello? Have you seen my mouth? You are a dentist after all, could you not tell that my jaw tends to lock when it is open for a while? Did the tears that slip out of my eyes not clue you in? Thank you to Dr. Shaw and Gentle Dental Office. The bite block helped immensely. I still hurt but it was not nearly as agonizing as my other experiences. It didn't hurt that you had ReadyMade in the waiting room for me to read. It didn't hurt that you let me take home a cute, tiny sample of citrus mint chap-stick. I guess it was th least you could do after I wrote away my paypal savings to you and to think you get a kidney next week for the next filling. Lucky you!

Is it a bad thing that I desperately want to bake something sticky sweet?

**the picture has nothing to do with anything but I thought the blue sky was pretty...

Addled....

I like this picture. It makes me smile. the fabric is so happy and the blue ribbon looks as if it is smiling at me. I stamped the tags for an faa swap. It was a scavenger hunt theme and I'm hoping the tags fulfill the "something with wings" criteria.

I didn't make it to yoga this morning. I did something to my left leg and it hurts when I reach out to touch my toes, or kneel, or stoop. Weird. I did however put the ironing board away. I put the ironing board away! This is so exciting to me. We have limited, limited space here in the tiny casa so an ironing board out in the living room made it even more crowded. It's already crowded what with all my fabric piles and book piles and piles of piles...the poor mister, he is most definitely NOT a pile person. I'm trying. I'm trying to wrap things up and develop a calendar of what I need to work on and when so that I can keep it all organized (stop laughing!). It will happen, it needs to. I want to host a Hat Making Tea in March, Who wants to come? I'm thinking Saturday March 15th.

I also managed to overbrew my tea...again. I do this on a regular basis. I pour the hot water in and step away and then completely forget I had tea brewing. I hate wasting it so I drink it but man is this cup bitter. I make a face with each drink. I also have a bad habit of doing this when making rice and baking. Many a pan I have killed because of this. Let's just blame it on the pisces in me. I'm a daydreamer and a whole lot lackadaisical. It's what makes me creative, right?

Most of my swap packages have skipped out merrily. I hope everyone enjoys their goodies. My brain is working overtime with all I want to create but first I need to finish and tie up these loose ends. Almost done...I will miss the swapping. I'll still be swapping, just not on the large scale I was. I need to fine tune it all; make gifts with purpose and intent and limit what I receive. As I have written before, this casa is tiny and I have no more room....

Happy Monday!

The Week in Review: February 4-10

Photobooth Friday: Found

photobooth friday: found
Click the pic for the back story...more boothiness can be found here and here

go figure...

I go into Whole Foods for lunchy-goodness and come out with a bottle of their version of Vitamin Water (NOT recommended) and four candy bars. That's me, healthy girl!

Seriously though, only one of the bars was for me. The one up there. For so long I have been a milk chocolate kind of girl. I love me some sweet milk chocolate and never passed up an opportunity to scrunch up my nose at the icky dark stuff. However, I am a maturing woman (snort!) and my taste buds have grown sophisticated...or maybe I have lost all sense of flavor due to my anosmia. Either way, I am beginning to develop a fondness for the dark stuff. I still think I prefer the milk chocolate but the dark is growing on me. I like my cakes and baked goods darker than not and I prefer my hot chocolate to be spicy and bittersweet so who knows, maybe I am actually maturing here. You may still be wondering why I only picked up candy bars at the market of all markets. The candy bars are gifts for long past due swaps I owe. I was short on time and their salad bar had experienced a mishap. The sandwich line was too, too long and the food counter had no sesame tofu, roasted potatoes or corn & arugula salad so I grabbed a bottle of the water, which was/is really , really not-so-good, I got the green tea flavor. Blech! As I got into line I remembered I needed some chocolates to send out and there ya go. Three for them and one for me. I work my way slowly through a chocolate bar. A cadbury creme egg, I will devour in an instant and then wonder why I did that, a chocolate bar I savor...and I like to dance around and sing "I've got a Golden Ticket!"...Truly, I do!

Gearing up for Pancake Week

or quite possibly "Too Late for Pancake Week" depending on which calendar you look at...Puff pancakes, popovers or dutch babies, however you call these they are just dandy! Here's my take on a classic recipe:

What you need:
1/2 c flour
1/2 cup milk (or your fave substitute)
2 eggs
a wee bit o' butter, slated is yummier
cinnamon and/or ginger
lemon
powdered sugar
small muffin pan (or whatever you got, you can do this in a pie pan even)

What you do:

Toss your empty pan into a warm oven (425 f) and let sit. Mix up eggs, flour & milk. If you are brave, add a half teaspoon of baking powder (this will add to your pancakes puffiness). Mix in a little spice if ya like, maybe a we bit o' sweetness like some vanilla or sugar, but not necessary. Set aside.

Using a nifty fun oven mitt, pull out your now hot empty pan. Add a dollop of butter to each cup and marvel as it melts. Add a dash of cinnamon and/or ginger then scoop about 1/4 cup of the mixture into each muffin cubbie. Bake at 425 for about 15 minutes. If you added baking powder don't peek or else you will feel like you are in that episode of I Love Lucy where the bread just keeps rising and rising. It will all deflate once you take it out of the oven but man, can these tiny pancakes puff up!

Plop out onto a pretty serving dish and sprinkle with fresh squeezed lemon juice and a pinch of sugar. Add some black pepper to experience it "jek style". These babies are so good, soooo many ways. Check out how Heidi made hers! If you don't feel like making them, you can always pick up a dozen or so in Solvang.

The Week in Review: January 28-February 3

In a nutshell, busy as always. Crafting, cooking, baking, gardening and school. How was your week?

Friday, February 01, 2008

I need a few more hours...

...in the day or the week or something.I'm in the middle of the kind of busy where even when you write it down you miss it. It's the kind that has you so frazzled that you decide to bake cookies instead or maybe reorganize your fabric pile or balance your checkbook even. Yes, THAT kind of busy. I'm quite behind being behind and so many things were due so many days ago, I need some sort of clone to assist me to the finish line. There are swaps, shop packages, grocery shopping, cleaning, homework and paper writing all due already.

I'm not sure what I was doing this week (other than playing diamond mine, ssshhhh.) all I know is that I need some super powers right now to pull it all off. I will log off, wash the dishes, bathe and then make a list of EVERYTHING that needs to be done all before 5pm...and maybe, just maybe I'll bake up a little something and run to the market for milk and cereal...wish me luck!
